НИЙ ADJECTIVES

Discover Russian adjectives ending in НИЙ and how their endings change.

In this lesson:

  • Learn how the НИЙ ending changes depending on the gender
  • Learn 5 НИЙ adjectives

Step 1 of 7: Синий, синий иней

Синий, синий иней

In the previous lesson, we focused on -ИЙ adjectives. This is our last lesson on adjective endings, and today you will learn about a special group of adjectives that end in -НИЙ.

Long story short, some adjectives end in -ний instead of the more regular -ный, like кра́сный. The good news is that the endings are quite easy, once you see the pattern!

Let’s start by looking at:

  • си́нийblue

Си́ний means blue. It is not the same as голубо́й, which means light blue.

For example:

  • си́ний домa blue house

What about the neuter?

The neuter ending should look familiar to you!

си́нИЙ → си́нЕЕ

The plural is familiar too:

си́нИЙ → си́нИЕ

For example:

  • си́нее не́боblue sky
  • си́ние шо́ртыblue shorts

Let's add some new vocabulary!

  • ле́тоsummer
  • о́сеньautumn

Let's take ле́тний, which is the adjective form of ле́то, meaning “summer”.

And осе́нний, which is the adjective form of о́сень, meaning “autumn”.

Now let's practise these three adjectives!

  5. си́н джи́нсы

  6. ле́тн пра́здники

  7. осе́нн ве́чер

  8. си́н пальто́

But what about the feminine?

Well, this one is slightly newer!

си́нИЙ → си́нЯЯ

So the feminine ending is: -няя

For example:

  • си́няя маши́наa blue car
  • си́няя ру́чкаa blue pen
  • си́няя ку́рткаa blue jacket

Let's summarise
